Is your child a little Bounder?
Beating the Bounds - 2.30pm - Saturday 11th Sept 2010
“The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
Run a ring around the land I love
To keep us all safe here”
To help celebrate GASS Day, Saturday 11th September, all children 10 years old and under, are invited to take part in our 7th “Beating the Bounds” ceremony. This starts from the Northcote Road footbridge at 2.30pm and will be lead by a piper!
‘Beating the Bounds’ dates back to pre-Christian Britain when communities would march around their village to remind themselves where the boundaries were. To reinforce the message children would then “beat” the boundary posts with willow wands and cries of “Whack it children, whack it!”
Our procession will take the children around the neighbourhood and finish back at the River Crane footbridge for refreshments. The journey should take less than 40 minutes. At the end all the little ‘bounders’ will receive a certificate recording their endeavours.
To add to the fun and festivity we invite the children to come in fancy dress.
We also ask that they bring with them their favourite noise makers - whistles, drums, shakers or rattles to help raise the dust.
To confirm that your children would like to take part or for more information please call Martyn on 020 8892 5211 or E mail him on:- martyn@days.demon.co.uk
